Skin banking is a facility where the skin is collected from eligible deceased donor and processed as per international protocols.

Skin can be stored in the skin bank at 4-8o Celsius up to 5 years. The stored skin can be used for Burns Patient who have Deep Burns, Chemical Burns, Electrical Burns, Radiation Burns. Statistics have shown that 80% of the burn victims are women and children.

Burn Research suggests that skin removed from a dead person and grafted onto a severe burn victim is the nest covering for the victim. But not enough skin is donated to meet the needs.

Skin donation Procedure:

Skin donation is very simple procedure. After the death of a donor, the next of his/her authorized kin just need to call our burns helpline number 27643333 of National Burns Centre.

Once the call comes to National Burns Centre for skin donation, Our Skin retrieval team respond within half an-hour of receiving the call. They reach the place of death in a specialized Burns Ambulance. Consent of relative is taken & the retrieval team harvest the skin of the donor only from back and thigh with a special machine called DERMATOME. Only one eighth thickness of the skin is harvested so there is no disfiguring of body at all.It is not even visible to persons who come to pay their homage After the harvesting, the area is bandaged and the donors body is handed over to the next of the kin. This Procedure takes approximately 45 minutes.

Skin Donation, a programme initiated by the National Burns Centre in India, is working towards increasing the numbers of donations it receives in order to save more lives. The National Burn Centre in India reports that patients with 60% burn wounds or more have a 100% mortality rate, which could be prevented with skin donations. By raising awareness through events such as lectures, camps and programmes, Skin Donation hopes to open up more centres around India, creating a network of skin donation programmes.

Cadaveric skin can be extremely useful in treating severe burn wounds. The National Burns Centre reports that 80% of severe burn patients could be saved if more skin donations are acquired. The cadaveric skin is grafted onto burn patients, controlling the loss of fluid and body heat, relieving pain, as well as protecting the patient from deadly infections.

in skin graft, one need not match tissue of donor and recipient. Any individuals skin can be grafted. It offers temporary protection for the patient against fatal infections.

Skin grafts are expensive to procure. It is tough to get skin from living donors. Hence skin from the dead are easier to use. Advances in technology help preserve the skin that can be rolled like a tape for three-four years, said Shinde. Skin from back and legs are taken from bodies and preserved in 85 per cent glycerol. Strips of skin are kept in sterile vials, which are sealed and stored.

Patients with over 30 to 40 per cent burns will benefit from this treatment as cadaveric skin can temporarily cover burn wounds. Eighty per cent of burns patients can be thus saved.

Eye donation is a noble act with an added responsibility. Nothing is more devotional than the valour act of gifting your middles to someone you don’t know. Organ donation is one of the way through which one can stay alive forever in people’s heart. Eye donation makes your eyes immortal.

Scientific discipline has made possible for a human being to donate eyes on his/her will for transplantation for those who really need the light of vision in their world of darkness. Everything in this world is perishable, but science has made this a boon for those who want to see the brightness of earth and for those who want to stay blessed and alive every day. Eye donation is an act of donating one’s eyes after his/her death. Only corneal blinds can be benefitted through this process not other blinds. It is an act of charity, purely for the benefit of the society and is totally voluntary. It is done after death. The eye donation of the deceased can be authorized by the next of kith & kin even if the deceased did not pledge to donate his / her eyes before death.

Almost anyone from the ages of 1 to 75 can be an eye donor, even if you wear glasses or have poor vision. Any donations that are unsuitable for transplant can be used for medical research and education. Eye donation is approved by every major religion. Generally, eye donations do not delay funeral arrangements or prohibit open caskets. Eyes are one of the wonderful gifts one can give and one can get. Aishwarya Rai has already pledged for her eye donation. An unfortunate person will get the gift of eyesight and he/she will be able to see the world through our eyes. Even though we die, our eyes will live on and see the world!

One of the real life story for eye donation- Late Sh. Himmat Rai
Age:- 78/M
Resident - Gurgaon, Haryana
Late Mr. Himmat Rai, a resident, Gurgaon was undoubtedly a man true to his name! The 54 year old Himmat Rai came from a small family of four, a wife and 2 children. Only a month before his death he pledged his eyes for donation an eye donation camp organized by Niramaya Charitable Trust in his neighbourhood. Himmat Rai may have passed away, but his eyes are still able to see the world through someone else. Today, his benevolence has given vision and a new life to the two blind senior-citizens, who can\\\\\\\'t thank him enough for his generosity.

It is the most humanitarian of acts that we can commit during our lifetime. So why wait? Let’s do that and go to the nearest eye donation centre and pledge our eyes as a gift to mankind!

Usually the doctors/nurse treating the patients should take care but it is good for the attendants of burn patient to be doubly sure. And in case there is any negligence, bring the issue to correct authority notice.

Hence throughout the course of treatment, a strict hygiene has to be maintained until the wounds are completely healed. The room and washroom used by patients should be thoroughly cleaned with disinfectant 2-3 times a day. Food containers used for carrying patients food should be properly sterilized before use. Outside food is strict no.

4. Skin Grafting

The surgery perform to cover the open flesh with a skin, taken from the other part of the body like thigh or lower back where there is no burn.

5. Protein Rich Food

Burned patient needs lot of protein and carbohydrates for damaged tissues to heel. Consult the hospital nutritionist to arrange for proper deit for the patient throughout the course of treatment.

6. Hemoglobin Check

Since lot of blood is lost due to burn injury, it results in very low hemoglobin level. Doctors cannot perform any surgery if hemoglobin is low. Hence patients should take diet which aids in building hemoglobin level and in some case blood transfusion should also be considered.

After the burn would heal a series of corrective surgery are required for correcting the contracted skin, reconstructing the burnt body parts like eyebrow, nosetrils, ear holes etc depending on feasibility. A good plastic surgeon should be consulted for planning out the sequence of operation.
